 2006-07 Law 191 concerning smoke-free environments enacted by the Danish Parliament on the 29th of May 2007, effective 15th of August 2007. The purpose of the law is to increase the spreading of smoke-free environments hereby preventing the health damaging effects of passive smoking and avoid situations in which people are involuntarily exposed to passive smoking. According to the enacted law on smoking prohibition employers, owners, restaurant keepers, managers and tenants who, in violation of the law, allow indoor smoking are fined. At Esbjerg Højskole we acknowledge the fact that non-smokers need smoke-free environments, as well as the fact that smokers need a place to smoke. We appreciate the fact that non-smokers value a non-smoking environment as well as the fact that smokers value the possibility of smoking without it bothering other people. As a consequence, we have organized an inviting and appetizing smoking room in the bottom storey of the school’s main building. Serving of food and beverages is not allowed in the smoking room; however, guests are permitted to bring their own beverages. To prevent outdoor areas from being covered in cigarette butts, ashtrays have been placed here. The major parts of our rooms are non-smoking rooms. In a few of the rooms, however, smoking is allowed, but no guarantees as to the availability of these rooms can be made. In the multiple-storey blocks of the school, smoke detectors have been installed. A guest smoking in one of the non-smoking rooms may cause the fire alarm to go off, which will lead to an emergency response. The cost of this amounts to 3.500,00 D.kr. which will be charged to the guest. If a guest violates the smoking prohibition in a non-smoking room he/she will be charged with the expenses of additional cleaning, as well as rental income lost as a consequence of the necessary airing of the room. Total costs amounts to 1.500,00 D.kr. If a guest violates school's smoking prohibition he or she will initially receive an oral reprimand. If the guest continues to violate the prohibition he/she will be dismissed. |
